Rifle Shooting

Rifle Shooting teaches discipline, team-work and self-confidence. Students
are given the opportunity to compete in individual and team competitions to
represent the school as part of the AAGPS. The Sydney High School Rifle Club is
the oldest sport in the school, being established in 1883. It is one of the only
sports which runs in both the summer and winter sport seasons. Students can
elect to participate in one season or both. Rifle shooting consists of two
programs: smallbore and fullbore.
The smallbore program is the first stage of training for all new shooters.
Students must be over 12 years of age by their first training session and their
parents are required to complete paperwork before students can participate. No
experience is necessary, and all equipment is provided for students to use. New
shooters are strictly supervised on a one to one basis by a licensed adult
coach. Once the new shooters are demonstrating safe and confident handling of
the equipment, a Minor’s Permit testing session will be run. Shooters who obtain
their Minor’s Permit are closely coached by staff and all operations are
overseen by a qualified range officer.
Smallbore takes place each Saturday at the Sydney International Shooting
Centre, Cecil Park and teaches new students the basics of shooting. This world
class indoor venue features electronic targets which provide our shooters with
immediate feedback on their shooting. We are currently expanding our range of
smallbore competitions against the other GPS schools that train at the venue. If
a student shows promising skill, commitment and enthusiasm, they may then be
selected to move into the fullbore program.
The fullbore program takes place at longer outdoor ranges from 300m to 800m.
The fullbore squad usually consists of about twenty shooters who train at the
ANZAC Rifle Range, Malabar each Saturday. This squad trains in fullbore from the
beginning of the year until the GPS competition in July whilst the remainder of
the year is dedicated to advanced smallbore training sessions. The fullbore team
competes in several external competitions and camps around the state in
preparation for the GPS competition.
