RugbyAs a GPS school, Sydney High is able to offer rugby as a winter sport. This is a wonderful opportunity for High students to be able to compete in one of the best schoolboy rugby competitions in the Southern Hemisphere. For details of weekly games, wet weather updates and any last minute game detail changes please refer to the school's home page where the calendar is regularly updated. Students and families should check this before leaving for games each Saturday morning for any last minute changes. While rugby is physically and mentally challenging, it is also very rewarding and enjoyable. It is one of the ultimate team sports promoting strong friendships and camaraderie, a healthy and balanced lifestyle, and the discipline necessary for good HSC study habits. The connections made during rugby often open doors to some amazing opportunities after student leave High. The High Rugby program takes place at the home of High Rugby, The McKay Fields, Centennial Parklands, with training also at the Moore Park West fields located next to the School. ![]() 1st XV 2019 at The Armidale School Sydney High creates great rugby players and even better people. Playing in the brown and blue, in a game made for all shapes and sizes, means that when you are down, you get up and keep going because there are fourteen other men willing to do the same thing for you. It’s the mateship that will stay with me long after graduating. — S Gerstl, U16s rugby player The experiences of playing rugby in the Brown and Blue are one's I'll never forget. There are very few sports that are so influential in shaping a well-rounded character, and in just 6 years I've shed tears, made countless friends, and built resilience and dedication. — M Marathe, 1st XV Captain 2021 The ProgramStudents may join the rugby program in any year but it is a sport which takes time to learn and is best started in Year 7. Games may be played at the home fields (Centennial Parklands) or at the opposition fields (which vary from Bathurst to Armidale). Each year the Home and Away roster alternates. Match results and reports are published in High Notes on a weekly basis. The Armidale TripEach year Sydney Boys High School makes the trip to Armidale to play The Armidale School in each age group. The students leave on Friday morning and return on Sunday night. It is usually the highlight of the season for players, providing a great bonding and character-building experience. The Melbourne TripIn alternate years the Senior Rugby squad travels to Melbourne to play Melbourne High School and one to two private schools in Victoria. It occurs in the July holidays and works as a building block to the GPS season. Gym TrainingIt is vitally important that the boys build strength and endurance. All rugby players are strongly encouraged to use the gym at school. A tailored program for rugby has been developed to ensure students at Sydney Boys High School can perform at a level of excellence and minimise injuries.
