Football is the most popular GPS Winter Sport dating back to 1988 played over Term 2 and Term 3. Sydney Boys High is unique as it is not only an academic selective school it is also the only public school among the nine members of the Athletics Association of Great Public Schools (AAGPS) - which means we are part of an exclusive group that competes at all levels in a variety of sports and activities and is arguably one of the highest standard school boys sport competitions in the world. High has won the GPS football premiership on three occasions: 1991, 1993 and 1995. We also compete in the very competitive CHS Football Knockout Tournament winning the South East Region in 2014.

Known as ‘The World Game’, football is far and away the biggest sport globally and it requires a unique balance of technique, effort and discipline. These attributes transfer off the pitch and into the classroom, with studies showing boys who commit to extra-curricular activities such as football are better prepared and disciplined for school work and the HSC.

Football is a particularly demanding sport that requires great technical skill and physical endurance. We aim to produce well rounded young men and realise maximum enjoyment for all involved and showing respect for each other, promoting the values of team work, co-operation and leadership. In addition football helps young men learn to accept both success and failure graciously; they become aware of the need to co-operate with others, using the best qualities of each individual to contribute to the greater advantage of the whole group; the importance of time management; personal effort; commitment; goal setting; self-discipline and cooperation. Sydney Boys High values Football because of the life lessons learnt as we are concerned with the development of the whole person, turning our young boys into young men.

In recognition of the importance of access to good coaching and equipment it is expected from them, in the training and the football program, to help create a successful culture. All teams are involved in 2-3 compulsory training sessions including their Saturday fixture. Preparation for the Football program, our trial matches and the GPS Football competition is a major commitment for the student that extends from March through to September. The focus of the football program is working on their fitness, technical skills as well as team work.

Currently at High, we have 500 footballers in 31 teams. Each team is provided with a coach that has accreditation in football coaching and refereeing. Additionally, we have provided our footballers with specialist coaching in goalkeeping, and strength and conditioning. Information regarding the Football program can also be found by registering with the SZApp. By signing up and registering to receive alerts from Football, you will be provided with up to date news and information regarding all things Football. Fixture information can be found in the school calendar.

High Football Family

All parents are encouraged to become actively involved by joining the Football Committee to help shape the direction of the football program. It is staffed and run by parents for the purpose of improving all boys’ enjoyment of football at High. A major source of income for the football program is parking for sporting fixtures at the Sydney Cricket Ground . Volunteers are always welcome and award scheme points can be earned by boys who choose to help out. If your son is involved in the 1st or 2nd XI team parents are obliged to help with catering for after the day’s play that involves an afternoon tea provided by the hosting school as well as the annual End of Season Football Awards Night.

If you would like to be involved in the committee or assist in the SBHS Football program, please contact the MIC, Mr Higgins, to find out more.
