Water Polo

Water Polo is the oldest Olympic team sport and has been played at High since
at least the 1920s. Water Polo is the most physically demanding of all team
games and teamwork is a key feature of the game, as players rely on their fellow
players’ fitness and commitment in the water in order for the team to succeed.
This is a great opportunity for boys to develop their mental as well as physical
strength, and to forge strong and lasting friendships. The High water polo squad
is a tightknit and supportive group who embody the best aspects of ‘High
Spirit’.
Why Play?
Water Polo is an ideal sport for competitive swimmers who want to participate
in another water-based sport on Saturdays, as the GPS swimming competition runs
on Friday evenings.
It is also a fantastic way for enthusiastic swimmers to build their strength
and endurance in the pool. High has a long tradition of welcoming players of all
abilities to sport, with a focus on building skills and confidence throughout
their time at the school.
Competition
Sydney Boys High School plays in a highly competitive combined CAS/GPS competition, as well as in
the CHS state-wide knockout tournament. We currently have teams playing in all
three divisions of the competitions – Opens, Under 16s and Under 14s. Matches
are hosted by several of the competing schools, and are played on Saturday
mornings. Games are played in four quarters of 7 minutes each, and average
running time is 40 minutes total, including stoppages.
We also have regular ‘friendly’ matches with Sydney Girls High, and a Players vs Spectators
game commenced in 2013.
Training
The squad consists of a core of experienced players as well as newcomers who
are learning the skills. Entry into the 1st grade team is competitive, and
although predominantly made up of senior students the team currently ranges from
Years 9 – 12. Both U16s and U14s teams contain a range of experience and skill
levels, and new players are always welcome.
Training is split between skills and stamina-based sessions at Victoria Park
pool, and game-based training at the University of NSW pool. Senior boys (Years 10 – 12) train on
Wednesday afternoons in Terms 4 and 1 during school sport. Likewise, Juniors
(Years 7 – 9) train on Thursdays during their scheduled school sport session.
In addition, the whole squad from Year 7 through to Year 12 train at
Victoria Park on Monday afternoons between 3.45pm and 5.00pm. There is a third
training session for senior players in both the Open and U16s division at
Victoria Park pool on Thursday afternoons between 3.45 and 5.00pm.
Pre-season training is conducted on Friday mornings during Term 3, with a
focus on building strong swimming technique and stamina for the upcoming season.
Competitive swimmers with significant squad training commitments are exempted
from this session, as well as from the Monday afternoon squad training.
