High Notes, Vol 17 No 24, August 12 2016

High Talent
Congratulations to Kieran Shivakumaarun (11E) on his award of a
medal in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) - Science. Students
with the top score in each subject in each year level are awarded a medal and a medal
winner’s certificate. Well done indeed. A great CHS tournament from our open tennis team.
The boys competed for two days and only dropped one set to Endeavour Sports High, winning 4-1 in
the semi-final. The team of Stephen Young (11R), Matthew O’Sullivan (10S) André
Putilin (9S) and Samuel Yu (9T) qualified for the state final for NSW government schools
competing for the Stan Jones Cup. Unfortunately, the boys went down 1-5 against Chatswood
High to claim the silver medal at CHS - an impressive display from our young team. The CHS
Convener invited the team to play at All-Schools. Last week at the CHS Cross Country Carnival
Jayden and Luke Schofield claimed 1-2 placing in the 17 years Division to qualify for the
national cross country competition. Eric Holstrom finished second in the 16 years’ age
group. An outstanding set of results for our Cross Country program!
Great news for the fencing program! After a ten-year drought, the 13As finally won gold last
Saturday against arch rivals SGS in the U13 Foil competition. Great work by Lachlan Ho (8T), Ben
Bao (8F) and Matthew Bui (8E) saw them breakthrough for a win. Our sabre teams continue to sweep
all before them in local competitions. Well done boys!
Enrolments for Years 8-12 2017
Enrolment applications have been assessed by
a team of teachers and a check score added to the top ranking candidates. A ‘best
fit’ addition of three of the closest four scores is calculated and the group re-ranked. An
interview list is generated comprising the top rated applicants. The number of interviews depends
upon how many places are vacant and on how many should be on the Reserve List. We normally
operate with a Reserve List of five places. Interviews are being held each afternoon for
short-listed applicants. A round of offers will be made next week. No offers are made for
students entering Years 10 and 12. Thank you to Maria Glenn, Lynne Williams and the SASS staff
for their rapid and accurate processing of applications, recording of data, arranging of
interviews and responding to enquiries. Thank you to the High team of Teacher Assessors who read,
assessed and scored the 214 applications so efficiently.
UNSW Research Project – Parent Participants Needed
High has a
partnership with UNSW for professional learning. We have access to research resources at the
University. One such resource is Dr Jennifer Jolly who is working closely with us in professional
development, practicums and mentoring for early career teachers. Dr Jolly is interested in
researching what influence parental beliefs have on the learning motivation and academic
self-concept of gifted students. We need parent participants to find out more, using an anonymous
survey. Their sons will complete a parallel questionnaire as comparison participants. We think we
might find out more about how students are socialised and how they feel about their learning.
Please be a part of this research. Contact

Winter Sport Co-payments
All winter sports depend on prompt payment of
invoiced co-payments to pay coaches. Parents are reminded that all programs have to meet their
budgetary obligations and cannot do so without maximum support from everyone. Our sports are
delivered at a fraction of their actual cost, being subsidised by parking revenues and ASF
donations, along with the structural support and supervision provided by the school with
assistance from the co-curricular support levy.
We are about to move from winter sport to our athletics season lasting four weeks. For most boys,
summer sports training will commence with the athletes training separately Please settle up your
son’s winter sports co-payment now.
Year 12 Letter to Parents
All Year 12 parents should have received a copy
of a letter from me, posted last week. The letter sets out the important events and dates marking
the end of secondary schooling for Year 12 students. Information about reports, references,
scholarships and the farewell assembly is included. Our zero tolerance policy on disruptive or
offensive behaviour during the final weeks of school is also explained. There is also
information about scholarships. If you are a Year 12 parent and you haven’t received this
letter, please contact the School Office.
