High Talent
Congratulations to our open volleyball team on their
performance at the NSW Combined High Schools Knockout competition. They secured a bronze medal
after being defeated in the semi-final by the eventual winner Kelso High. Well done to Supan
Arudselvan, Thomas George, Sean McKenna, Niyaz Mostafa, Kevin Robinson and Sunny X (year 12) and
Aidin Karahasan, Max Menzel, Harry Park and Ryan Seong (Year 11). Julian Markworth-Scott and
Carter Opperman have been selected in the NSW Developing Athlete Program for basketball. Well
done, boys!
New Enrolment Applications – progress
The Selection
Committee has considered the 198 applications that were received for Years 8, 9 & 11.
Scores have been collated, rank orders determined and Assessors meetings are being held.
Interviews will be organised commencing Monday of next week. It is anticipated that the process
will be completed by the end of August.
Second Grade GPS Honour Board
GPS competition has always been only about
first and second grade teams (until the recent third grade rugby competition was given
competition status). High has not had a history of having the depth in any sport to win the
second grade premiership. Since I was appointed Principal in 2000, High has won six second grade
premierships. When we can count volleyball as an official sport I hope to see more victories. I
believe strongly that first and second grade teams should train as a squad and compete with each
other to share the GPS experience.
Recognition of the efforts of our second grade boys is well overdue. We have now mounted a GPS
Second Grade Premiership Honour board in the bay to the right of the GPS premierships bay. Most
of the teams involved have also had their photographs mounted around the board to give a context
of faces to the teams painted in gold on it. I hope boys are inspired to try to get their team on
the board in coming seasons.
Old Boys Union Mentor Scheme
Eric Wong (SHS 2000) is heading up a pilot
mentorship program, initiated by the SHSOBU, to connect current student members of the OBU with
the tertiary education sector and the world of work. The first invited students will work with
Old Boys at school for an hour 3:30-5:30- with the anticipated outcomes being:
- Gaining insight into the pros and cons of working in various industries
- Understanding the best pathways into various industries / professions
- Appreciating the importance of setting personal goals and looking beyond the HSC
- Sharing advice on how to achieve both at school and at work.
Parents are requested to encourage their sons to be involved in this worthwhile program. The
first workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18. I commend the program to you.
