High Talent
Congratulations to Nathan Sutton and Bailey Musulin who were
selected in the NSW Combined Independent Schools basketball team and to Jack Hutchison, as a
reserve. Well done to Joshua Pooranakaran (Year 8) who was selected to attend a national training
camp with the AIS in the sport of Karate.
HSC Results 2014 - Presentation by the Principal
For parents interested in
High’s results at the 2014 HSC and more generally, in how the HSC and ATAR work to produce
an index which controls likely UAC offers of university places to school leavers, come along to
the Great Hall on Monday, May 11 at 6:30 pm. The presentation will be the main item on the agenda
for the regular monthly P & C meeting.
Full Uniform Policy
High is proud of the fact that its boys wear their
school uniform. We expect boys to be in their appropriate uniforms at all times. In winter there
can be extreme weather events but where adjustments need to be made in clothing, the High Store
has responded to the requests from the SRC to supply approved supplementary items. The
school beanie and school scarf can be worn at all times as part
of the official school uniform. Students feeling the cold should not improvise with random items
of clothing of various colours and designs. It is permissible to wear white skivvies underneath
school shirts when it is really cold. Students in Years 7 & 8 are allowed to wear sports
clothing on Thursdays and can add the school tracksuit for warmth. When it is raining, umbrellas
are recommended rather than non-uniform anoraks.
Funds in trust to support our students
The Annual Financial Statements for
the Sydney High School Foundation Inc. have been prepared by the auditors. They show the
following movements: Ethel Killip Memorial trust (honour boards, artworks, memorabilia
displays) 2013-$122,026, 2014-$124,525; The Prizes Trust (annual funds to pay for prizes at
Presentation Night) 2013- $85,816, 2014-$90,137; Mitchell Seow Memorial Trust (prize in honour of
an Old Boy) 2013-$7,348, 2014-$7506; Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship Trust (an annual $1,500
scholarship in honour of a former Head Teacher and Old Boy) 2013-$77,717, 2014-$79,240; and the
Student Support Trust Fund (formerly the Anzac Trust Fund – to assist necessitous students
to access the programs of the school) 2013-$17,104, 2014-$32,005). It is comforting to know that
the Sydney High School Foundation has stewardship of these substantial and growing
funds, targeted towards acknowledging, honouring or assisting our students.
Centennial Building Fund
Income derived from all sources for the Centennial
Building Fund was $492,101 for 2014. This represents around $410 for every student in the school.
Despite the contribution from interest earnings, the bulk of the income came directly from
donations from parents. I am very grateful and heartened by the strong and growing level of
support from parents who appreciate that for the standard of learning and personal development at
High to be maintained or improved only non-government funds will achieve that purpose.
Joint Project update
Theatre consultants, Marshall Day, have completed
their theatre design brief for the Governors Centre Project, for discussion, amendment and
ratification by the Project Control Group. To fit out the theatre to be ready for operation, the
budget for theatre infrastructure and equipment would need to be at least $331,000. The
space would then be ready to accommodate: acoustic and amplified music (for concerts and
recitals); choral or dance performances; large cast musicals or stage productions; public
speaking events and lectures; variety concerts (with performance and presentation elements); and
debates, competitions, assemblies, meetings and presentations. The Governors Centre (when
constructed) will facilitate enhanced learning of boys and girls in both schools significantly in
the creative and performing arts.
